Coalition Members Launch Kurdish Organizations Coalition for the ICC
Network will advocate for Iraq to accede to the Rome Statute
Representatives from Kurdish NGOs and bar associations, academics and journalists at the formal launch of the Kurdish Organizations Coalition for the ICC.
Last month, Kurdish civil society organizations met to form a Kurdish Organizations Coalition for the International Criminal Court (KOCICC) to push Iraq to join the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Over 35 representatives from Kurdish NGOs and bar associations, as well as academics and journalists, met on 30 March to formally launch the coalition and elect a 13-member organizing committee. Kurdish activist Ali Mahmoud was chosen as the KOCICC’s coordinator.
The newly established KOCICC will work with the Iraqi National Coalition for the ICC to engage in advocacy and capacity-building towards Iraqi ratification of the Rome Statute. This cooperation is of great significance as combined efforts from NGOs in both Baghdad and the Iraqi Kurdistan region will highlight the importance of joining the ICC and encourage the Central Iraqi government to do so in the near future.
Initial activities have thus far included awareness-raising events in the Kurdistan region. Future events include workshops in Iraq for members of both the Central Iraqi and Kurdistani parliaments, as well as government officials and organizations.
Iraq s interim government announced a decision to accede to the Rome Statute in February 2005, but withdrew its accession without explanation two weeks later.
How do national coalitions work?
National coalitions for the ICC play an important role by organizing the efforts of NGOs at the national level, allowing organizations to share expertise and work more efficiently towards a shared goal, such as the ratification of the Rome Statute. Although they function independently, national coalitions benefit from the advice and guidance of the Coalition for the ICC. There are currently national coalitions active in over 80 countries.
In May 2005, the Iraqi Coalition for the ICC was formed following a round-table discussion organized by the Coalition for the ICC and FIDH.
